Hello from Washington State. I am a new user to a Kemper Profiling head that I inherited and I am hoping to begin to Explore the basics of this incredible system. I haven’t looked into cabinets for it yet and have only played with it using the headphone jack as I have it in my home office. I have a 1997 Ampeg R212R 60’s reissue with 2 12’s and wanted thoughts on if I could or should try using it as a cabinet as a starting point using the line in. I look forward to learning more on this forum and about the Kemper profiling power head.

welcome!! Oh yeah, hook it up, turn the cab sims off. Is your unit a powered or non-powered? I love my Kemper though a speaker cab. It kills. You will have a lot of fun.

Welcome to the forum! I'm guessing that your KPA isn't powered, and that you're talking about running it through your Ampeg instead of an FRFR speaker. I wouldn't recommend doing that, as the Ampeg will color the sound, so you won't get the proper profiled amp tone. If I'm wrong, and it is a powered Kemper, then you could surely hook it up to the Ampeg's speaker cab, turn off Cab sim in the Kemper, and you'll likely get a good sound. However, to really get the true profiled sound, you need as pure a reproduction as possible, so good monitors, or a good FRFR system (many here use the Yamaha DXR10) is preferable IMO. Good luck!

Thank you both for the warm welcome and feedback. Yes, this is a powered Kemper head so I may try hooking up to the ampeg to use as a external cabinet and as you mentioned, turn off the cab sim. I’ll update how it turns out. I have a few other amps I’ll be picking up along with a few cabinets sometime in the next month or so.

Welcome, mate.
Great as cabs are, the FRFR option will obviously allow you more variation of tone in that it'll be akin to being able to swap cabs on a whim IRL.
If you end up happy with your cabs, more power to ya, but if you still hunger for more variation...

Welcome!

I agree with Monkey_Man with the more variation of a FRFR however, if like me, you are still wedded to a guitar cab (I love my victory 2 x 12) then try some direct or merged profiles and see what you think.
-
Hey Nicky - just out of interest which FRFR do you use/recommend?
-
Don't use one, Dave.
Just pointing out to / reminding him that if he gets bored with the sound of his cabs that there's a universe of tonal options at his fingertips should he choose to go FRFR.
EDIT:
As for recommendations, I tend to suggest folks check out Yamaha 'cause their gear is always solidly-built and great value.

I’ll have to get through the 100+ page manual on this beast. I will look into a FRFR initially and see what I can find. I will say I am already enjoying using just the headphone jack and playing around with the Kemper today. Lots to explore on it and I now need to see about doing a software update if it needs it. Haven’t looked into that yet. Thanks for all the welcomes and info!
