I see where some people either use theA7x or the A5x with a subwoofer. Is a subwoofer necessary with the A5x?
Adam A5x or A7x

I don't know if its needed with the A5X. If it’s “only” for the KPA then you certainly wont need one. If you’re mixing - then maybe. Depends on the style. If you do lot of electro and hiphop a subwoofer is certainly handy (no matter if the A5X or A7X). But that would also depend on your room. If it’s not soundproof the subwoofer might cause resonances you don’t want and influence your mixing decisions in a bad way.
I use the A7X without a sub and I don’t feel the need to get one. If you do mainly guitar oriented music you’ll be fine without it. If money ain’t a factor here, then get one - why not.
But as you see your question is hard to answer without any specific informations. Hope I could help you anyway.

In general I believe that subwoofers cause more problems than solve problems during the mixing stage.

I don´t need a subwoofer, but it depends on the size of the room...
I mix my music on two A5X in a room with 20 qm and it´s more than I ever wanted.
Best sound ever!
I had two Yamaha loudspeakers first, then with a subwoofer...
but with the A5X (without subwoofer) everything sounds more ... stereo ... fuller ... richer ... more balanced ... don´t know how to describe it.Best regards!

I'd go for the larger One. I have Dynaudios with SUB. It's nice. Having a short listen at the Musikmesse at Frankfurt some years later (with an upgraded larger Version of my monitors) I would have bought the larger ones without Sub.

Just using it for the KPA. Sounds like not needed. Nowhere close here to hear one with the KPA so I may just buy the A5X since size is a concern for me. Since it is replacing my headphones I hope Ingolf is happy

Thanks for trying to make me happy! -
That's the most important thing when buying a monitor. Keeping Ingolf happy!

more problems... especially in near field monitoring situations...

You'd need two subs to get a true stereo image.
I have the A5X and they go down to 38Hz, more than enough for mixing. I pretty much high pass everything except the bass guitar above that.

I do believe KPA-related gear review charts should exhibit an IH parameter as well
