It's actually 1 vs. 3, since you need another cable to power the HD 500
No, 1 midi +1 power cable, no use for the 2nd midi cable with HD500..

I have pretty much done tweaking the HD500 as a controller to cover all my live set needs (cover band, sort of wide range of music). After reading the (somewhat incomplete) remote information I'm going to stick with HD500 for now. The things I miss from Remote are: fewer cables (1 vs. 2), multistomp on/off switching and maybe the tuner
I think you miss even the stomp status on/off, am I wrong?

No I don't, I have those in sync with some pre-programming. Not as effortless as the KPR' real time handling, but the end result is the same..

I don't know how difficult is to program it (is there a PC/Mac editor?), but overall I think that POD HD is a very smart choice as a controller... and it costs much less than the official remote+pedal!

It does look like a very capable controller - if you already have one, and are used to Line 6's way of doing things, it could certainly be worth using.
If you haven't worked with it before, though, be sure and factor in what your time is worth to you, when comparing the cost of controllers. Difficulty in programming can add a lot of time for initial programming, and changes will always take more time with other controllers.
Also the hd 500 can be 4cm'ed to provide a looper and additional effects, including spring reverb, and you have good control over placement in the chain. Given the kpa's output choices, you can actually do a complete wet/dry mix
If not the bank no. shows anywhere its easy to be lost
No, performances can even be named, so no chance to get lost.
