How ?
How to get the Dire Straits sound on Money for Nothing ?
-
-
There's a decent one on the rig exchange by burningyen called.......
JTM45/MONEY 4 NOTHIN

The main ingredient to this sound is a cocked Wah fixed at a suitable position within the range. Just play with the Wah stomp and limit it's range to a very narrow band where it sounds right. Had to play the song at a show a while back and this got me extremely close.
Cheers,

Cheers,
Markusthis does get you somewhat close, but it's not how this sound was supposedly originally created.
IMO this is onle of the very few sounds that can be tone matched very well.

I was always under the impression (and read that in many forums) that it was the sound of a cocked Wah. Well, it did work to give a Money for Nothing sound which I was perfectly happy with at least.

My go to website for everything related to Knopfler is this: http://www.mk-guitar.com
It might come handy for someone else too. -
I heard that this sound had been obtained by accident with a laney amp in studio. But which one?
And whish mic, preamp...?
With a Gibson Lespaul. -
even the guys that 'made' the sound (accidentally) that had all the info and sketches of the setup couldn't recreate this tone.
-
Yes, then maybe a Soldano SLO100 profile ?
-
right, that's what I thought and used when I did a tone-match of this sound before the Profiler, it worked pretty well.

This should work. -
Straight from the 'horse's mouth'
Mark Knopfler explaining how they got that sound

He uses the thumb a lot keeping that 'four beats to the bar' rhythm going.
-
Funny how Mark himself when interviewed by John attributes a lot of the Money-for-nothing-tone to his crybaby, while the producer doesn't mention the pedal at all. It seems like the producer thinks it was all in the positioning of the microphones. No wonder he never was able to reproduce the tone elsewhere.
-
I know also Mark uses the Reinhardt Amps for his live solo work and recordings. Like a Marshall Superlead.
I got the Reinhardt Storm 33 from The Amp Factory thats sounds great for this!

At this article from Sound On Sound, Neil Dorfsman (Brithers In Arms Engineer) says that's a Laney combo, but I don't think so.
http://www.soundonsound.com/people/classic…s-money-nothingHere, Guy Fletcher show that's a JTM 45 into an 4x12.
Maybe with Electro Voice 12L speakers.
Due to sound character, this is my guess but with Greenbacks instead EV.

Very nice.
Could you tell the profile and the settings? -
wasn't there something about a microphone stand dropping during recording that caused an 'out of phase' type sound or something like that ?

See post #2 - that is Ben's soundclip from back when he added the rig to RE.
