Just got my KPA rack home, updated the firmware to the latest version. Had a scroll through the factory patchs and haven't found anything usable in terms of modern metal sounds, its all either cleans or classic rock as far as i can see. I presume i'm going to need to download some profiles, can anyone point me in the right direction?
Where to start with high gain rigs?

I downloaded "ola england"'s profiles, one of which is just about usable Are there any other sources i can use? Starting to wonder if maybe i'm doing something wrong somewhere, all the high gain sounds very thin. (Haven't accidently disabled cab sim!)

Welcome! I personally love the profiles that I bought from THE AMP FACTORY. You can listen to samples of the rigs on that site and see if anything sounds like what you are after before you buy too.
They have a very wide variety of amps to choose from. Good luck! -
you should have a look to the (free) Lasse Lammert pack !
-
Yes, the Lasse pack=great.
-
Anything Lasse Lammert, and read the link below. there are some cheap commercial ones and a lot of metal forums have some give aways as well.
best of luck.
-
Keith Merrow pack too...
And stuff by Fluff on the rig exchange...
-
I've recently read this thread. Lots of examples, profiles and links in it.

Check out the profiles of user Juanma Blanco on Rig Exchange. He did some great profiles. Try them with some other cabs as well (Lasse Lammert or TillS).

Thanks for all the advice so far i'll try some of those out tonight. I was just expecting it to blow my £100 v-amp out of the water and so far it really hasn't. Time yet though

really...
what are you monitoring your Profiler with?
-
Powered monitors (M-Audio BX5a's). The profiles I've tried so far have sounded quite thin and fizzy. They also don't really to have the same attack/response as my relatively cheap tube amp (Peavey 3120).

Well, if that's what you think about Ola's Profiles and the KPA doesn't "blow your £100 v-amp out of the water, then, "Houston, we have a problem".
Perhaps new guitars and monitors?
Or, perhaps, you're overreacting/exaggerating too quickly, before spending enough some time with the KPA?There are hundreds of free high gain Profiles that sound fantastic.
Way too many authors to mention, but for starters, the Till's Profiles, Ola, Lasse, Djemass, Erik Stam, r.u.sirius, Keith Merrow, Andy44 (free), Steve Pearce, okstrat, Juanma Blanco, FastRedPonyCar, M.Weinstroer, M.Franzkowiak, Dirk Gooding, Gila, Marko, etc, etc...besides stock Kemper Profiles. -
I've only spent a few hours with it so far so that's possible. I still think maybe I'm doing something wrong somewhere. Almost every high gain profile i've tried doesn't sound "high gain" at all until i use the boost stomp?
Guitars and monitors have worked fine for 2 of my bands albums

Are you by any chance using active pickups? Check if the battery is starting to die out, that doesn't sound normal at all.
-
Actives yes, battery very doubtful but will double check.
-
The ones GuitarTone mentions above are spot on, and free. They are super profiles - I can't see how Amp Factory or any other pay site can beat those profiles. Like, almost all profiles from those people are great. And free. For monitoring, I use KRK Rokit 5 monitors, and it sounds really good. I can get the guitar to feedback through the monitors, too, for whatever that's worth to you. Some on here connect into the effects return of an amp (for amps that have it). I just ordered a Fender Mustang III (v1) just for this purpose, based on recommendations from people on here. That way, I can have the amp-in-the-room sound when I'm able to play a little louder, or if I play with a band. That amp costs less than $200 used. Don't get the V2 version which came out this year, though, as the effects loop on that does not bypass the amp's own modeling stuff.

I'll have a fiddle tonight, will maybe post a sound sample see if you guys think it sounds normal!
-
Anyone know where i can download the Lasse Lammert pack? All i can find is a few single profiles on the "rig exchange" and forum posts talking about its release with no links...
-
kemper-amps.com > support > downloads > Category: rig packs.
If you like weird fx, try the Bill Ruppert pack as well!
Actives yes, battery very doubtful but will double check.
Can you try with another guitar? Because to me the loss of gain sounds like a classic case of bad battery or connection (bad cable, dirty jack etc).
