Avoiding extremely high gain rigs will help.
Fast/slow bow speed, and more/less bow pressure can be used for dynamics, if the windings of your strings react appropriately.
If you can’t use playing dynamics, you can try turning down the output of the guitar - doing that may give you a little more dynamics.

A volume pedal would definitely do the job. Combined with playing dynamics, this would give you a very wide range.

It will work in front of or after the amp block, it all depends on what you're after. If you just want more dynamic range with not a lot of reaction from the amp, place it after. But if you also want the amp to react to the dynamics you would place it in front.

If you're just looking to create a lead tone you can either use a pure boost stomp that you trigger when you need it from a footpedal, or you can actually change the volume of the rig's amp and control that likewise.
If your'e talking about general dynamics then the standard tricks apply. Use a lower gain sound, make use of the input sens settings to create more of a different between clean and distorted tone volumes (if you're driving gain instead for more oompf), enable parallel path to bring in some clarity, use a green scream to accentuate your treble frequencies as this is where the audience hears attack in notes (and as a result dynamics), use a compressor but as an expander instead by keeping the makeup low and slowing the attack, use the pick aprameter in the amp block to add transient dynamic accentuation...
