Michael Landau: “People go insane comparing different amps… The cabinet and speakers make far more difference”

I agree.

Nice read thank you!

What I've been saying for decades already.
Cab makes 90% of the sound.
-
I am not sure how we would be able to quantify the percentage of cab, mic vs the amplifier when it comes to overall sound. But for sure people often underestimate how important cabs, speakers, mics are.

Yes I was being completely serious and scientific with the figure.
But the difference between a Diezel Herbert and an Orange Rockerverb with the same cab and guitar in a full band mix was almost imperceptible in my experience, when swapping back and forth between amps.

My first "Wow" moment came in a studio that my friend used to own. I was recording a rhythm track with my Bogner Shiva and it was too thick and muscular. The engineer grabbed a Deluxe Reverb (that I had played several times) and plugged it into the Bogner speakers (open back, 2 V30's).
It sounded more like my Shiva than a Deluxe. I was astounded.
If you read the Landau article - he often records his Fender Princeton throug a PAIR of 4x12 cabs loaded with vintage Greenbacks.

I agree the cabinet has a large impact.
However, when hearing through a play back system the mic and room are a big part also.
In addition the specific tubes play a part in the eq and even response of an amp.
The guitar tone is a sum of its parts with, IMO, all parts being equally important. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.
When listening to the sound the effect of feel isn't percieved and when making profiles this is very important and has more to do with the amp than speaker.
