Hi guys, I'm looking into investing in the liquid channel if I can find a used one at a good price. Just wondered if anyone here has used one and what their views were on it. On gearslutz their are good and bad opinions but mostly people seemed to think it was good. I'm still not sure why Focurite discontinued them

No experience - but be aware that the plugins are not 64 bit - only 32 bit versions are available (I'm pretty sure, at least). This means that e.g. Logic Pro X can't run the plugins.

Sorry Michael I'm after buying the hardware version not the plugins, got a damn nuff of them lol

I believe the hardware is software controlled, unless you want to commit and print the EQ/comps. You most likely will print the preamp emulation though, of course.

Ah, I was thinking of the liquid MIX, not channel. That might be different
From what I can see (I looked at reviews etc some time ago), it was quite a decent unit. I've seen them used at what I believe was around a fourth of the price of a new unit.

My understanding is it acts just like a normal preamp

Ok cool

Hi all,
To confirm - the Liquid Channel acts as a 'normal' preamp with many emulations (preamp, EQ and compressor), though you can control it digitally using an application (not a plugin). It was discontinued quite some time ago, supported operating systems are listed here: https://focusrite.com/downloads/os?product=Liquid+Channel
In practice, the control application has been seen to work with far newer operating systems than the OS Checker indicates, though it's not officially tested or supported on those platforms (for example, it's been seen to work with Windows 10 and OS X Yosemite).
If you need any information about the Liquid Channel please feel free to contact us directly: https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/requests/new

Thanks Jack for chiming in and the info. I'm on Pro Tools 10 HD with windows 7 and i dont think i would control it with the plugin anyway. Why did Focusrite discontinue it. I have also heard that repairs are quite expensive, is this true? Also was there anything common that went wrong with these units.

Hi Raoul (I believe you may have just spoken to a colleague using our Live Chat feature but I thought I'd post here anyway!),
You don't 'need' to control the Liquid Channel using the application, though it should work fine on Windows 7 regardless.
The Liquid Channel was discontinued due to the company not wishing to pursue Liquid technology any further and instead focussing on audio interfaces.
It's hard to discuss repair costs since it depends on what the fault actually is in any given circumstance as to how much it will cost to fix it. Our repairs service tends to be very economical, (though this is of course a matter of opinion). There are no common faults that I know of with Liquid Channel units (if there were faults, we would have done everything we could to rectify these during the product's life cycle).

Thank you Jack for all the info

Of course, for all intents and purposes, it's a "timeless" preamp that encapsulates many classics, so you can't really go wrong IMHO, Raoul.
I well remember hankering after it, but knowing that there'd be no way I'd be able to afford one, all those years ago when it first appeared to much praise in SOS.

Well I found one nearly new at a great price and will be with me tomorrow, can't wait

I had one in the past. For me to much of a hassle one way or another. The UI was not really user friendly and I was not able to get the full potential out of it. Sometimes less is more. The thing is very heavy by the way.
The guy I sold it to is very happy with it:-).

Well its just arrived but there seems to be an issue with the screen ::(, its flickering abit, well the light is so maybe the backlight is on the way out or something has come lose in transit. Any people out there seen anything like that
@Untuned you are right it is heavy.
-
well i sorted the screen just a lose connection only had about an hour last night and really like some of the preamps, ive got a feeling this is going to be a good unit

Congrats on your new bubba, Raoul.
