MIDI Grande - nice and small MIDI controllers for KPA
-
-
Cool , is there an editor for the Midi Grande ?
-
Editor is currently not available, it is planned for next year.
-
Cool , hope it's easy to program without the editor
-
Yes. Unlike most other MIDI footswitches, it has 7 special buttons around the display for comfortable programming the presets.
-
These look great! So each of them would be powered by the KPA itself? The sizes of the smaller ones just seem to be what I was looking for.
Kind regards
-
KPA has not phantom power on its DIN5 connector, but MIDI Grande can be powered by improved MIDI cable like this:

There is a supply tail on the rack (KPA) side for connecting power adapter. The supply is conducted by the MIDI cable and 7-pin DIN is on the side of MIDI controller. -
Can I use the Looper inside the Kemper with those controllers?
-
Yes. Commands for KPA looper are sets of four CONTROL CHANGEs (described in thread How to get the looper working with any Midi Device). These controllers can send up to 8 commands at once.
(But, as I know, looper control by MIDI still isn't officially documented by Kemper and can be changed in future without notification.) -

-
Neither rack nor toaster version of KPA doesn't provide the power supply for MIDI controller. The principle of this cable can be used with any set of MIDI controller and MIDI controlled device. The only requirement is that the MIDI controller can be supplied by MIDI cable. Some MIDI controllers from different manufacturers can be supplied by pins 1 and 3 or 6 and 7 on the MIDI Out connector.
It is also possible to conduct MIDI In, MIDI Out and power supply by one cable. For more info, please contact me by email. I am not allowed to write about MIDI Grande on this forum. -
Really? Why?
-
Half a year ago, a Kemper company manager contacted me by email and asked me not to write posts regarding my MIDI controllers because he considers them as advertisments and a competition for the Remote.
-
Are you sure that there was not some kind of misunderstanding?
-
IMO there is a direct competition between this midi controller and the remote. I understand that kemper has asked to "limit" the advertising for your products. the pricing makes them serious competitors and myself I'd not pay 450€. I may be interested in the near future
-
I think it wasn't misunderstanding, but I understand the reasons. Well, let's talk generally.
In all cases, one multicore cable can be used instead of two cables.
The simplest bidirectional connection of a MIDI controller and KPA can be made by two MIDI cables:

Only pins 4 and 5 are used according to the MIDI standard. The pin 2 is used for shielding. Other pins are unused or they can be used arbitrarily. If the controller supports phantom supply over MIDI cable, the cables can be connected like this:

It is the case of the cable on the photo above. But still two connectors are necessary to be connected to the MIDI controller for bidirectional connection. Some MIDI controllers have only 5-pin DIN MIDI Out connector. Then pins 1 and 3 can be used for conducting the power supply and they should be soldered internally for connecting with power supply connector in the controller. If the controller provides MIDI In signals on the MIDI Out connector, it can be connected also by one special 7-pin MIDI cable for conducting bidirectional MIDI and power supply:

MIDI Grande can be connected like this. It can be simply internally soldered in many other MIDI controllers. If the controller has input for guitar signal and the signal is connected to the MIDI In connector, all the signals can be conducted by this cable:

MIDI Grande has an experimental Guitar In connector in some variants and a balanced preamplifier is developed for future versions. The Guitar In connector can also be home-made drilled and soldered to the MIDI In connector in many other MIDI controllers. With this concept, only two cables or one multicore cable, instead of 4, can be used for connection between the front of the stage (musician, MIDI controller) and the back (KPA rack/toaster, amp/cabinet/combo).Good bye if they delete my account after this post.

Thanks for sharing this info Microdesignum!

Does anyone know how to activate the expression pedals on the MidiGrande 5FD1`? I can Calibrate ot on A and B, but thats all. Need Help or a tutorial that, can explain a MIDI newbie how to do!
