One quick question: Is it possible to drive two 4x12 cabs in series with the built in power amp? I might need to drive two cabs on both sides of the stage in the future. Is a Y-cable the smarter solution?

No, that would drive them in parallel. You'll need a specific outlet in at least one of the cabs, specifically conceived for a serial connection.
OTOH, the Y cable might float your boat, just consider that a parallel connection would reduce the impedance to one half (if the two cab's impedance is the same and the power amp has to be able to work at that impedance.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah my Mesa cab has a output for serial connection. If both cabs are 8 ohms the Y-cable should also work, because the built-in Kemper power amp can handle 4 ohms connections, am I right?
The official line is that it can handle 4 ohms at reasonable/low volume. Minimum 8 ohms to protect the power amp, to be sure.

IMHO Mesa output is for parallel connection. So if you have 8 Ohm cab and connect another 8 Ohm cab you will get 4 Ohm.

Anyway, it's perfectly safe to have the power amp drive cabs @ 4 ohm. At high current output the amp might go into protection for a second. But you'll only get a sound gap, no hardware risks.
