Can someone explain why we like uber gain only to have to dramatically reduce it in a mix?

  • And you have to reduce it even more when double-tracking or tracking against other guitars. Is there some science behind cutting gain other than it sounds better in a mix?

Larry Mar @ Lonegun Studios. Neither one famous yet.

  • Someone here did a test with his kemper, double vs quad, and didn't make any difference with the gain. I don't know why we love so much gain. But its pleasing to the ears. With some pickups you can crank a little more gain (e.g. Lundgren M6) and still have clarity and with other pickups not.
