This is one of the things I have not really tried yet. I have used Direct profiles with my power amp and cab. Have had some good results there but not tried using the direct profiles for recording.
Who likes Direct Profile with 3rd party cabs?

I have no preference for direct or studio profiles when choosing/playing with 3rd party cabs

So if you use a 3rd party cab can you still merge it for live use or does it just stay loaded in the cab block?

Well, I don't use the Kemper live No, you can't merge it (well, you can - but merging only makes sense for a direct amp profile and its studio profile "twin").
But you can turn it off like any other cab. The result will of course not be as "authentic" as if the amp block came from a merged profile, but might be perfectly fine.

You don't need to merge in this situation, as the cabinet section is already defined. Also you can still bypass the cab on the monitor output for live use, while sending the full rig to front of house.
