Guys you're feeding my GAS now with these Slate Digital plugins...do you know if there is any discount for a VTM + VCC bundle?
What about some Tape Saturation live? ;)

its everywhere on sale for 79 euro. thats 50% off
with tape it sounds better (to me) and everything that sounds better, why not use live?
also it makes the guitars more upfront, so guitars will be even better noticable
just dont know if the strymon can get close to something like that -

Tape saturation surely gels together better different sources, but there's always the danger of smearing and then guitars would be less distinguishable in a certain frequency range.
For simple boosting, Richie Blackmore used a real tape machine to drive his Marshalls better, way back then.
But this is a different kind of thing. -
It's an interesting little box, this Strymon.
I also use the Slate VTM and VCC here and they do indeed seem to be some kind of 'secret sauce' that just makes things sound better.
The Strmon box here seems to be more of an effect. I can see why - with the Strymons, the effect is relatively subtle - when you're using it on a mix the time you notice what it's doing most is if you turn all the instances off on each channel and you think 'ah, ok. THAT'S what it was doing'. An effects pedal that is too subtle won't sell so well I don't think. So this thing seems to be concentrating on the more 'in your face' things you can do with a tape machine as opposed to the Slate thing. So I suppose you need both

in the studio i use the slate digital tape sim always on every track, thickens up guitars for example. If the strymon is close i would put it between Kemper and FOH for all profiles. Not the double track function, just the tape saturation
I use a Crane Song HEDD 192 for exactly this purpose. It's unfortunate that the plugin version of it (Phoenix 2 - see this month's Sound On Sound) is only RTAS, or I'd buy it in an instant.
Everything everyone's said about Slate VTM, BTW - I've tried nearly every tape sim plugin out there (with the exception of UA's) and nothing else stacks up to it.

i simply have to try it out, yes maybe its more a sort of effect and less subtile

Like I said, I'm glad if I can hear the guitar-player at all... I'm visiting many concerts here in Hamburg (the last ones f.e. Robert Plant, Triggerfinger, Rick Vito) and for me it's really funny to talk about tape saturation for live-shows.
The less effects you use, the better the audience will hear your guitar, I know colleagues using tons of effects, they always sound terrible on FOH. Too much delay, reverb, modulation etc. will kill a clear guitar-signal and mostly it's to live or to die... Especially if you're playing with one or more keyboard-players, horns ect. I always heard the best guitar sounds with simple guitar-setups on stage, of course it's easier to cut through in a trio-setup, but even there effects often won't help.
If you have bad luck -like I had on the Triggerfinger-concert- the acoustic of the room/venue or the guy behind the knobs or both are so bad that you just hear a muddy mess.... I couldn't hear any guitars and we're talking about a rock-trio, there were just drums, a muddy bass and a bit of vocals.
I think tape saturation is a great tool for recording, but totally needless for playing live.*
*if you're playing in a venue with a worldclass-acoustic, your monitor and FOH-guys are living angels and you're using the best equipment money can buy, it could make some sense.

This is something I'd really like to invest in soon I've heard great things about the HEDD 192!!

I make my profiles with an Anamod ATS-1. All the tape goodness you could ask for!

i play with less effects Günther and i will not use the doubler. Maybe the Tape saturations you know are different, the ones i mean just do a slightly eq thing and give more power similar to pushing a tubeamp instead of playing on low volumes or work like a great mic pre. Some other tape saturations i know would not work for that and mess up the sound live yes

I only know the usual plugins, no pedals.
