I really enjoy the sounds I get from the KPA when recording directly, but there often seems to be something missing, like some air, liveliness, 3D, not sure how to explain it.
On the other hand I think the KPA sounds killer in the room via a tube power amp and cab. I typically use 2 mics, a SM57 and an AKG C2000. Now, If I record the same part with direct analog main outs and the 2 mics, the KPA 'direct' sound misses some air, and if I play back the miced sounds, the sound misses some focus. Soundwise I get the best sounds when combining those mics and the direct signal, but I also run into phasing issues when turning on all tracks, which the phase invert option of my daw does not fix.
The way I record now is stereo main outs or spdif stereo into my daw, and the mics in front of a mono cab. This is also how I would like to pan things, the stereo hard left and right and both mono mic sounds in the center.
Is this (combining direct and mic'd) something any of you also does and how do you prevent the phasing issues?
Cheers,
Michael
