With my Kemper Head, I use the Midi Captain 10 running firmware v.4, with PySwitch v2.4.9 also installed; I can select either v.4 mode or PySwitch mode at startup. Can I also install Bosun? If so, how? Thanks.

For the past few months, thanks to AI, I’ve been working on an open-source project that’s been meeting my guitar-related needs really well.
Playing in an ’80s rock cover band, my main requirement is to have a good number of different sound and effect combinations while, at the same time, avoiding endless tap dancing and having to manage everything through duplicated presets that quickly become difficult to maintain.
I was already using a Kemper Player + MIDI Captain setup, and since I found the MIDI Captain’s stock firmware rather limited for my needs, I soon discovered PySwitch as an alternative firmware. I used it happily for a while, but eventually realized that it still didn’t fully meet my requirements.
With the Kemper Player, this is the kind of setup I use:
1 rig with an acoustic simulator
4 rigs ranging from clean to lead, with progressively increasing gainFor each rig, I want to be able to turn specific effects on and off, but also change specific parameters of individual effects.
An effect that is used in multiple rigs may also be located in a different slot in each rig, which makes programming the Kemper even more cumbersome.
And, of course, each bank can be completely different from the others.
A setup like this requires a lot of configuration flexibility — something I’ve perhaps only found in MOD Audio. That’s why I decided to create Bosun.Bosun is an open-source alternative firmware for the 10-switch PaintAudio MIDI Captain, designed primarily for the Kemper Profiler Player, while also supporting generic MIDI devices.
Its main features include:
- Bidirectional communication with the Player: rig names and effect states are updated directly on the foot controller.
- Fully customizable switches: separate actions for press, release, and long press, with configurable labels and LED colors.
- Editor for Windows and Android: manage profiles, banks, rigs, expression pedals, and backups. macOS and Linux builds are also available, although they are currently untested.
- Stage, the external display: view rigs, effects, and the tuner full-screen on a smartphone, tablet, or monitor, with touch controls.
- Android instead of a Raspberry Pi: connect the MIDI Captain and Player through a USB-OTG hub, and a smartphone or tablet can handle the MIDI connection while simultaneously acting as both the editor and Stage display.
- Optional Raspberry Pi: handles MIDI, displays Stage on a monitor, and provides network access. It can even create its own hotspot, so no router or Internet connection is required.
- Standalone operation: with a direct MIDI Captain–Player connection, no computer or smartphone is required.Project and downloads: https://github.com/danmigdev/bosun-midi-captain
And of course, it’s completely free! I hope someone else finds it useful 😄
Great! Thanks! A video tutorial on installing the various devices and how to use them would be helpful.

I've been having similar problems described here (and other guitarist/bassist forums) with Rig Manager for years.
Been a Kemper user since 2013 - initially the rack unit, then I bought the Stage (Mk1) shortly after it was released.
I was considering upgrading to a Mk2 unit, however, until the Rig Manager becomes much more predictable (for example: does not suddenly write over preset slots in Performance Mode), I will definitely not be buying a Mk2 unit.
In the meantime as I've needed a rock-solid floor unit this last few weeks, I've gone back to editing all my presets, rigs and performances directly on the Kemper Stage leaving out Rig Manager entirely.
Have you tried RM Beta 4.3.8? OS 14.2...
-
Please elaborate on what you mean
"it was just a question"
-
"they're working on a new machine" and those like me who upgraded to MKII: waste of money!

-
After having had Kemper for many years I purchased Kemper MKII: I expected much more than just a V2 profiling updat!

-
Kemper Head MK2:Installed version RM4.3.8 windows and the same problems remained while creating and saving Performances.

I've finally resigned myself: modifications with RM and saving directly from Kemper! RM beta 4.3.8

Kaos 14 and RM 4.2.13 after rig changes, saving is always very problematic. I'm now resigned to the fact that after changes to the Rig or Performance, I save directly from the Kemper head.

-
From what I can see, it's fixed.
I have latest version 4.2.13 windows but still many problems during rig saving
-
I've had Kemper for 10 years, and since the MKII was launched four months ago,
I've been super satisfied. But instead of improving, Rig Manager has gotten worse, especially when saving rigs. When I need to make major changes to a rig, I turn off RM, otherwise it often causes problems. -
The update procedure would be a great sticky post, BTW. Or a guide on the Pyswitch website.
-
I'm attempting to update my Kemper Rack to the latest update via a flash drive but when I insert the flash drive it only gives me the options of "backup/restore" or "import/export".
Any idea as to how I can perform this update?
Thanks!
you need to put the kaos file in the main root of the usb stick

They all have the same RAM. You confuse things: The disk size doesnt matter. What DOES matter ist the amount of actions and labels....and as quemper said if you have less switches you will likely not use that much actions.....
Reason is: After the files are parsed, the RAM used for this is freed again. Just the created objects (actions, labels etc) remain in memory. Thats how Python works. In theory you could make the files too big, but thats really not relevant here. Never mind the file sizes
