Defintion ist just a brightness control.
I'm pretty sure this is incorrect.
Defintion ist just a brightness control.
I'm pretty sure this is incorrect.
I know there have been countless posts from profilers and others telling us before EQ etc. to try the definition control. At first, I didn't get a handle on exactly what it was doing as it isn't just some dumb treble & bass control you can easily hear the sweep of. It's doing something subtle and magical. After years of messing with it, I find I don't look at it as an EQ but as a "feel" control. If anybody would say to me a profile feels too "stiff" or "digital" I'd say try turning the Def down to like 7.
I've noticed that many paid profiles come with the definitions way up and they can turn you off that way. Having the def down to like, 7 can make a Marshall feel more like a Marshall really does. With the Def on 10, it sounds cool. sharp and in front but IMO not as "real".
I have read this is like a feedback circuit control that can make the feel go from vintage circuit to modern but I've always wanted to know exactly what definition does. It's almost like it messes with the harmonics and high settings sound like adding a Sonic Maximizer to the sound. (remember those?)
Oh no, another choice to deal with.
You can always GAS into expensive Guitars
I have too many of those already. Some people are one amp and lots of guitar people, some are a few guitars and lots of amp people. Some are both.
I'm closer to the few guitars but lots of amp type. Now I have a Kemper so I have every amp.
I've been wanting the part where they fixed the rig volume knob to 12:00. I always laugh when people talk about Kemper being "old" and wanting a Kemper II etc. Many people just need to have the latest greatest before you do so they can tell you how great it is compared to the "old crap" that you have. Like the people that have to be the first to see a movie that comes out.
I remember when the ADA preamp came out. Expensive, but everyone raved about how amazing they were. A few years later everyone had them and they were "80s" sounding and I had to beg to sell mine for for $75.00. Now since they are more rare they are super great again and go For $800.00+.
I look at it this way, few people think about getting rid of their "old" 68 Plexi because it doesn't have a touch screen or integrate with the latest Omnivex cosmic bitrate inverter using a Linux operating system. "New" units are still trying their best to compare to amps like this. Great sounding can never be "old".
The Kemper has already saved me over 5x what it cost me. I used to spend around $2,000.00-$4,000.00 a year with my GAS addiction, but the Kemper has all but put out that fire. Once in a while I'll get the urge to buy maybe an an old JTM, DSL40, Soldano or tweed blues Jr. but then I realize it would just be a novelty I'd likely sell like I did my ENGL, EVH and Blackstar amps that I found the Kemper could reproduce more consistently than the "real thing". I kinda miss having G.A.S. but now I can spend money on things like the light bill and fast food.
It’s been said before, but I find that focusing on all the great stuff I can already do with my Kemper is a more satisfying approach than longing for updates I’d like but don’t have.
It’s remarkable really that Kemper is still supporting such relatively old hardware, most companies would have replaced the original Kemper with later versions, abandoning updates for the old Kempers and forcing people to buy new hardware each time. Or forcing people to pay for new software. That we still get free updates at all is a bonus, even if there’s a delay.
I agree there has been many new latest greatest Fractal and Line 6 things that made the old stuff "obsolete" While Kempers are still going strong all over pro stages. We're just spoiled by the usual new goodies we always got regularly.
Yes could be a hardware issue of the Kemper. Contact the support.
I'd just about bet it's not. It's some kind of RF noise going through the guitar/cable. Maybe from the Kemper itself or something else. If nothing is plugged in at all except headphones I's suspect the wiring and other things plugged into the same circuit. If it did the same thing at a different locale with nothing plugged in then I might suspect something with the Kemper. You have to eliminate everything else.
Every noise problem I have had with the Kemper has not been the Kemper but external noise from something. A nearby transformer, a cellphone, and my PC. When I get my JR with P90s anywhere in the vicinity it produces this high pitched annoying sound that is always there, you can hear it in the sound even with a noise gate. Clicking sounds are often from a data transfer like a router or something. Computers & peripherals generate a lot of bad RF. In older houses there are sometimes leftover transformers buried in walls that went to the dial up phones. I'd try moving it to different places and different plugs in a completely different building with a different guitar and see if you can eliminate the Kemper from the equation. If I get that guitar close to the powered kemper it makes noise too as the Kemper produces some RF too. Try moving it to a different building and leave off your watch and cellphone.
I have some excellent wahs: vintage Vox wah and A 95Q Adjustable "Q" (filter) for dialing in wah range +15dB kickswitch boost and a old Standard model. They all sit in a cabinet unused since I bought an expression pedal. Anything I want to do with a wah is handled with the Kemper just fine. I'm not sure if my "real" pedals sound "better" or not, (I've never A/B'd against the Kemper wahs) but since I never felt the need to drag my old ones out I'm sure any difference would be so small it wouldn't outweigh the convenience of the expression pedal and toe off function. Having used real cry babies for years I can tell you you'll miss nothing sound wise going with Kemper's built in wahs. I guarantee nobody will ever say to you at a gig "That didn't sound like a crybaby on that one part".
Moog EP3 Toe down = off. No worries about pedal droop that way. Doubles as a volume control if needed. I have had a longtime wish that the time to switch off be adjustable.
The best thing you could do would be get a Kemper to try. Most people say its the best "amp" sound and feel. With all of the new AI profilers out, that may not be 100% true anymore
If profiles can be made with the Kemper that even the owner of the amp cannot tell the difference between the amp and the profile how could a new AI profiler be better? What could be better than creating an exact duplicate feel and sound? I have profiled amps from naysayers and they could not tell the difference at all. How could that be improved?
I find myself sticking to the generic tone stacks over liquid as I prefer the wider control. What I think would be super cool, though, would be to add a parameter to all the stomps that allowed you to simulate the device's operating voltage, like when you're using a phase 90 on a half dead battery.
Just curious, what qualities does running a Phase 90 on a half dead battery reveal?
It's not only that it skips. When it does that it has a 3 sec delay until it lands to the wrong performance. This issue had destroyed a number of my recordings... so I ended up using a midi controller...
I spoke with Kemper support about this. It's a known software issue. A workaround I didn't know about was using the TYPE knob to scroll through performances. You have to click once to wake it up then you can scroll and load performances with precision. The issue with the rig cross is it has a (too short) time between when it selects and when it starts scrolling. I would think that could be an easy fix, but it's just a very minor issue for me that is solved with the type knob. I was just happy to hear that it was known and my button wasn't going bad.
If I run through all of my (6) performances and back again this only happens about 15% of the time. I ran back and forth between them 20 times and I couldn't get it to skip. I still think being plugged into the USB even though RM isn't loaded is the culprit somehow. USB can be a boon but it can create loads of difficult to diagnose problems as well. Not an issue really just an oddity.
For some reason scrolling down through performances using the "cross" down button my profiler always skips a performance. I know that holding the button down will scroll but I am pressing the button very fast and even then it will skip a performance. Sometimes I can get it to go up one by pecking it extremely fast. It's almost like the button sends two signals when you tap it. I have heard of this problem for other users years ago but heard it was fixed. Mine still does it. I don't think it's the button it works fine for everything else besides performance selection. Do you think it could be a software problem?
Sometimes I will turn mine on and the Performance name and rig name will not be accurate or mixed up. Changing performances realigns it. Even though RM is not on I believe having the Kemper hooked up to USB and exiting RM or turning off the profiler with RM on is the reason. It's not a big issue though and I never notice any problems like this when not connected to USB so I'm pretty sure that is a factor.
Would be nice to here more from Kemper what they thought is “clean compensation”. They know how it is programmed and how we should use it in contrast or addition to clean sens.
They recommend it to change the behaviour of distortion Paddels in front of the amp
As I have said countless times, if you want to understand "Clean Sense", Watch the video, it explains it perfectly and east to understand in about a minute. The manual is very confusing the way it speaks of it. Clean compensation is a different thing that happens that adjusts the volume per the gain signal in the chain instead of what happens when you change the gain knob.
Even after watching all available videos and endless tinkering I was never able to configure "clean sense" to actually get softer when I back off volume on the guitar. However, the Beta 11 code actually does support this when "clean compensation" is dialed to minimum. I no longer feel like I'm fighting with the volume leveling.
That's because clean sense adjusts what the volume of the Rig does when you turn up/down the GAIN, not volume of the guitar.
This would be awesome, for us gigging players
Yep, that's what we have been saying for years. I normally only ask things that I think could be easily done, not things like: "I'd like 8 XLR outputs and a 9" touchscreen". I'm really surprised this hasn't been taken on. As I have said, I'd trade liquid profiling for it.
These are "Müller Nighthawk" and "The Valve 3/100".
You find such information in the Rig Reference List available at the KEMPER page.
So where is this "rig reference" list? Where is the "Kemper Page"?
