KPP freeze

    I've been having a lot of issues with my setup freezing during shows. I use a Mini 6 with PySwitch and a KPP. Usually when this happens, the Mini 6 displays the boot screen with PySwitch version number and the KPP becomes unresponsive. I'll usually reboot the KPP (unplug and plug the power) and then everything will work fine. Last night this happened early in the show and then worked for a while. Towards the end of the show it kept happening and I couldn't get the Mini 6 past the boot screen. When I tried it again after the show, things looked normal. Any ideas? I'm on the latest KPP OS, but I haven't updated PySwitch since I first installed it. The Mini 6 is connected via a 2-port USB hub together with a Doremidi switch to MIDI converter (for the toe switch in my expression pedal). Bluetooth is off, Wifi is on (but it wasn't connected to anything at the time).


    I'm used to having at least one freeze pr gig and it's driving me nuts. I haven't had time to try the KPP by itself as I always need the extra functionality and I don't have much time to fiddle with the setup between gigs. I remember a lot of posts about KPPs freezing a while ago. Has anyone solved this?

    How do you power the KPP and the other devices ?


    I’ve had those kind of issues with mine doing two different things :

    - powering the Player with a power bank (on paper having the right specs) designed to power pedals and the KPP

    - powering something else via the KPP usb A port

    I use a Harley Benton powered pedalboard with a 3A 9v output for the KPP. The Mini 6 is powered from the USB-A output.

    I just realized that the Mini 6 can take a standard Boss-type 9v input. As there are several available on the HB, I'm gonna leave it on for a couple of hours and see if I can provoke a freeze at home.

    Don't power devices by using the Profiler USB ports.

    I'm currently testing with an adapter and tests seem promising. I don't recall any documentation that the USB-A output couldn't power devices designed for bus power, but I'll use a different power supply if that helps.

    That's good to hear. There were quite a few posts about this a while back. The consensus at the time was to turn off bluetooth. That hasn't helped me, but as you stated above, my issue might be power related. Does this mean it's safe to turn on bluetooth, even at gigs?

    I think the time has come to clarify this one regarding USB and the KPP.
    What about the tablet C. Kemper is powering via the KPP in a video on the Kemper’s channel ?

    What about the Retro screen T. Dill is powering via the KPP in a video on the Kemper’s channel ?

    When is it ok and when to avoid ?

    No, please leave it off. But since you have it off, it will not be the reason for the freezes you're seeing.

    It's a misconception that USB-A ports on devices are generally designed to power other devices. The port on your Player is for an USB stick (and those don't need much power). It is not intended to be a powersupply and when you drain too much power from it, things will get unpredictable.

    But it IS intended for MIDI I/O, hence the lack of dedicated MIDI ports. So, as Where is Christophe writes, there’s a lot of room for confusion regarding ports and connectivity.

    You can use the USB-A port, but you need to make sure that any device you connect does not draw significant power from it. If you want to connect multiple devices, use a powered (active) USB hub or ensure that the devices have their own external power supply.

    Connecting three devices directly without external power is a receipy for disaster. Components like CPUs etc. can crash when they're underpowered.

    I've been leaving the KPP powered on for several hours a couple of days in row now, with the Mini 6 using a separate PSU from my pedalboard. Everything I´good so far. I have a new gig tomorrow, so hopefully everything will be alright then.
