Icepower Installation

    Has anyone installed an ice power solid state amp in a cabinet themselves. Or aware of any documentation for a DIY project? I have seen all the components at various distributors but concerned that a successful installation may be just beyond my capabilities. I have a 12 inch fender tweed extension cab I have never used. Drop a Kone in there and a 200 watt Ice power amp, a iec socket, a volume pot and boom there ya go.

    If you can't handle the mod yourself then any local music or instrument repair store should be able to help - and maybe draw you up a diagram to follow. It should be pretty straight-forward.

    Finally gotten around to raising the hood on my power cabinet neo kone.

    The amp is an Ice power 300 ASC. The nearest thing I see currently in stock from Parts Express is an Ice Power AS1. Description is very similar and appearance is identical. The Module is installed with threaded hollow stand-offs about an inch above an .065" aluminum heat shield/ sink on the cabinet back panel.

    To the left is an IEC socket installed in a metal dish. The socket is grounded to the dish and also to the heat shield plate. I have read elsewhere that this grounding is crucial to safe operation and noise reduction.

    To the right is a second metal dish with the I/4 " TS female connector. I have not seen one of these mounted to the small circuit board but there are numerous available that will work with some soldering.

    At the bottom is the bracket that holds the switch and volume pot. Have read elsewhere that some have eliminated these parts and control the volume with the profiler by assigning the master volume to the monitor output. I have also seen IEC sockets that have a switch integrated.

    Parts express sells a wiring kit that has all the small connectors with appropriate ga. wire leads.

    So the remaining mysteries shouldn't be too deep having a model to work from.

    Main question, if installing without switch or volume pot where does the lead form the input jack connect to the module?

    So word of caution after initial power up and subsequent power up do not touch anything on the module. Never plug in the power unless the back panel is closed.

    Never open the back panel until power is disconnected.


    Well once again I will have to postpone my project. It has come to light that a potential source for neo kone may be less than reputable. Kemper is also out of stock.

    I have a passive Kabinet which I run with my power rack and I'm considering getting a MK2 Stage as I don't always use a Cab - its becoming less and less important as I switch to IEM's or in house monitors.

    So options are:

    1) Get a power amp - I have this solution already but Im not keen on running speaker leads across a stage - I suppose its not a huge issue but...

    2) Get a powered Kabinet - they are expensive not easy to source in the UK and I'd need to sell mine etc so seems a lot of hassle

    3) Convert my Kabinet - which I like the idea as its a neat solution and would give me a little project, but my understanding of electronics is rudimentary at best so it would need to be pretty straight forward.

    So for option 3, the wiring diagrams all seem fine but I do like the idea of a volume control on the power amp itself. The answer seems to be some kind of pre amp ( which is what I assume the little circuit is near the volume control on your Kab) but I can't seem to source anything like that. Running the power amp flat out just doesn't seem right but I know others don;t seem to have that issue.

    So with all the complications with inventory i traded in my fender cab, 4 or 5 stomps, and a supro amp for a used power kab guitar center had for $414. Appears to have been the only available under the $800 new price in north america. Also got a skb case for my suhr jm classic.

    If i had bought a passive cab would have been hard to justify the parts and effort to upgrade it for $235 budget.

    So now i will have two power kabs to run stereo in the studio and one of my qsc k12.2 wedges for rehearsal and live monitor and running main out as well to console.

    Hey whippinpost01850,..greetings from Seattle. Just read about your installation of a 200asc in a Kone cabinet. I'm just finishing with a Kone-Cab build and am wondering how you mounted the amp in the cabinet. The Kemper cabs mount it to the back panel, apparently an inch or so off the surface. Did you add any additional heatsink, and have you notice any heat issues? (I have one of the newer 200as1 amps, but virtually the same as the 200asc.)

    BTW, also read here that you're 75 and still gigging! Outstanding! I just turned 75 as well but haven't played out since Covid shut everything down...but I still play just about every day and have no intentions of stopping--even though 'Father Time' remains undefeated... Cheers, George
