How will Kemper measure the accuracy of Profiling 2.0?

  • The Profiler Model referred to in this thread is ...
    ☑️ Profiler Head/Rack

Kemper has mentioned that Profiling 2.0 will offer higher accuracy, which makes me wonder what metric they’re actually using to evaluate that. Profiling on the current Kemper already works really well for many players, including me, but I’m still curious about how they measure improvements internally.

So far, most people rely on the null test, which is good at checking how well the frequency response of an amp is copied, but it doesn’t really evaluate dynamic aspects like touch response, so it isn’t enough on its own.

I think it would add a lot of credibility if Kemper shared even a general idea of how they evaluate accuracy. It would help users better understand what “more accurate” really means.

  • From the official web page:

    • More than 100,000 individual frequency points meticulously analyzed for the most powerful amp recreation ever achieved.
    • Next-Level Speaker & Dynamically adjustable Cabinet Resonance – Capturing the true dynamics of your setup with the longest impulse responses in an amp capturing device.

(notice the absence of the word "accuracy").

I'm sure they have several ways of evaluating the accuracy during development - both technical measurements and A/B/C tests.

I doubt you'll get any official answers :)

  • I remember the old website used to say “the most precise amp recreation ever achieved,” so I assumed accuracy was an important focus. I didn’t realize it has since changed to “the most powerful amp recreation.”

Both "precise" and "powerful" are meaningless in this context. They've been very careful to avoid the word "accurate".

  • Really? Where did you see that?

  • I guarantee it will never be 100% accurate. I think it was originally at 95% at most, so maybe it goes to 97%.

Can I tell a difference? NO.

Can the audience tell a difference? NO.

Will I save money by not upgrading? YES!

  • The other thing is, the definition of accurate seems to be pliable for a lot of people. Accurate according to whom?

I think avoiding that debate altogether is smart.

You either like the product. Or you don’t. At least for me, accuracy doesn’t enter into it. Do I like the way things sound or don’t I? Do I like the way things feel or don’t I? Beyond that, I really don’t care.

  • For me, a key feature of the KPA has been the ability to massage the amp sound toward the sound you want after capture with all the parameters in the amp block. With the Liquid Profiles you can even modify the tone stack settings. A profile is not necessarily the endpoint of the process whereas with most of the alternatives the capture is exactly that.

Given what an enormous contribution the speaker and cabinet make to a guitar sound, the new cabinet parameters will offer further sound shaping possibilities after a capture/profile is made.

I get that some people were not happy with palm mute sounds on high gain amps for example so more accurate rendition of those sounds would clearly be a plus. Will be interested to hear the results when they are ready for prime time.

So.. not that careful after all.

And I want to play guitar like Joe Satriani. That doesn't mean I do :). The point is they've been very careful to not really say anything about the new profiling. I can't say I blame them. It's probably best to wait until it comes before saying anything about it.
