Format - lack of progress bar

  • The Profiler Model referred to in this thread is ...
    ☑️ Profiler Head/Rack

    USB Stick / Format Device / Yes - Are you sure?

    Screen does not change to:
    1. Indicate that Format is actually happening and;
    2. There is no status bar (0 to 100%) to indicate that formatting is happening with Status.

    Think of the way that Mac OS does it!

    Changed the title of the thread from “Format Bug / Lack of Feature” to “Format - lack of progress bar”.
  • True! Are you sure, that formatting is even needed? Any USB-stick preformatted with FAT32 just needs to get acquainted with the PROFILER: You just plug it in and the PROFILER creates three folders (Backups, OS Updates, and Shared) within a moment and you are all set.

    Formatting is the quickest way to have a clean slate on a usb stick.
    I rarely travel to gigs in the uk or abroad with my laptop.
    Before I leave for any gigs, I format a usb stick via Kemper Stage, then backup to it in case of any problems while I am away.
    Please don’t tie us to laptops for the simplest of tasks that should be undertaken on the units themselves.

  • Well, if you don’t format it in the Kemper, then how do you quickly format it to get a clean slate for a backup?

    You: "Please don’t tie us to laptops for the simplest of tasks that should be undertaken on the units themselves." We don't tie you to anything because you can format your USB stick using your Profiler. And Burkard takes about pre-formatted USB sticks. Nobody want to change anything. All that's been said is that you probably never have to format a stick anyway, hence there is no real need for a progress bar. So what's your problem here?

    I have no problem whatsoever. Was just clarifying what was said. Is that a problem?

  • Let's stay on topic, please. The issue is there's no UI feedback during a USB format. This is objectively true.

    And. Other Kemper UI *does* provide feedback during lengthy operations (boot, shutdown, backup, restore...) via the progress bar.

    The ask is for USB format to follow this established pattern.

    It matters because without UI feedback, there is no way to judge how long the operation might take. That is inconsistent with existing Kemper UI.

    So: May we know if Kemper can accept this feature request? A simple yes/no would be sufficient.

    True! Are you sure, that formatting is even needed? Any USB-stick preformatted with FAT32 ...

    Very true! But not every stick is new! Sometime you want / need to repurpose one.

    And sometimes they get reformatted. Maybe ExFAT? Maybe a Mac format? It happens.

    Imagine you've got a stick. You just want it to work. Easiest thing? Pop it in the Kemper. Hit Format.

    All that's been said is that you probably never have to format a stick anyway, hence there is no real need for a progress bar.

    No. "Probably never" is objectively not the case. Sometimes people *do* need to reformat a stick.

    The unit offers a feature to do this. Right now it leaves people stuck, with no indication how long it might take. That is inconsistent with existing Kemper UI.

    As for "no real need" for a progress bar during format? Why, there's no "real" need for it during boot, either. Or during anything. We "could" all just sit and wait on all our devices; they'll finish eventually.

    Yet Kemper has gone to the effort to provide good UI feedback. It's simply better. Why would Kemper *not* want Format to offer that level of quality?

    Some thoughts on this;

    (1) In the preformatted USB drive case (my observation, this is nearly always): there is no need to format, and

    (2) a used drive, which you will need to format: I would definitely do this part in a laptop so I can see what is on it first.

    So case 1 is non issue; case 2, better take care of that before you go on the road.

    In my case I bought one new drive for each profiler and I leave it in there. If it goes on the road, it gets checked before, and i have a spare one in my go bag. Now and then I check how full they are. So I never use the profiler to do that. Handy that you can, but for me the safe protocol is: check the USB now and then on the laptop, have a spare, and keep the main one IN the profiler. Now honestly I don't use a player so I don't know the practicality in those circumstances but for the rack and head this works great.

    This is good advice. I realise that my USB Stick (64 GB) is really way too BIG for Kemper Backups. 4GB much more realistic and formats "instantaniously" - well as good as. So IGNORE my feature request. My Kemper Head + Liquid Profiles = EXCELLENCE.
