Harley Benton Thunder 99: what's Your opinon?

  • Hi, anybody use it?

I was going to buy it and use it with a 1x12 with Kone for a small stage or rehersals setup.

The idea is to put it inside the rear panel of the unpowerd kemper head.

Stereo in and out are Not necessary right now but, who knows, maybe Tomorrow I'd like to add another cabinet.

I Had in the past other stompbox power amps like EH 22 caliper and EH 44 magnum but didn't like them 'cause they start to add compression and distorsion very Soon when You turn up the Volume.

I use sometimes 2 Marshall 8008 (rack stereo power amp) and I like them. The are rated at 80watt per channel and this is more than enough for my needs.

So I thought that 2 x 50-Watt at 4 ohm provided by HB small stop box could be good.

Anybody already have experience with it?

Hard to go wrong with it at that price point I'd say and usually the Thomann stuff is good value for the money. Not classy but okay.

When I was in the market I decided for the mono variant, i.e. the Harley Benton GPA100 as it has a bit more headroom due to the 100W and skips the stereo capability which I definitely don't need. I have powered Kemper as well and my Kone loaded cabinets (based on Rocktron's S112) already have an option to daisy chain the cabs in series or parallel mode. What I really like is the built in power supply, no need for an extra wall wart!

So with two Kone loaded cabs the GPA100 makes way enough noise to have my loud drummer kind of under control 8o

  • What you can't see but should be noted is the power supply. So I returned it and bought the GPA-100. However, to install a power amplifier in a passive speaker, I would rather use a module designed for that purpose, especially for cooling reasons.

HA!! In my case the drummer is way more "politically correct" than my Bass_And_Singer: He screams like and eagle and he barely can hear his Bass (4×10 + 1x15 stack) ..damn deaf boomer!!! Heheheheh (just joking I love him)

About the HB99 external power suppiler .. You're both right!! But, I suppose, this may allow me to put it inside the back hole of the unpowered Head. Basically I Need something Small that could fit in there.

Another thing I don't like (maybe I'm wrong) is to have another EQ to care about.. I already have the Monitor EQ right? Do I really need another EQ on the power amp? Too many choises/variables are not always a better solution right?

Thanks for the links 7b73f9969de1b5aaa5ceea7084eb19b7605a67d2 .. You reminded me there's a guy, not very far away from me actually, that builds power amps Upgrades panels for kemper.. "blugeniale" or something like this.. I should give him a call even if Im afraid it costs me a lot more than 99. Good likns anyway! Thanks.

  • Yep I have one I use with a single home made CAB with 1 Kone , it's excellent & very loud. It works perfectly and is quite neutral in terms of tone , with an Oxford imprint , it sounds like a 4000€ vintage fender. I don't have to EQ anything.

And You still have the option to go stereo with another KAB or Kone.

The power supply is huge ( but flat ) for sure, like a big laptop one, but it's not a problem for me as it stays in the studio.

So I highly recommend it , it's inexpensive BTW.

Renaud...That was more than enough for me to order it!!:P

Received yesterday, tested alone and in a quick stereo comparison with a 100w Mosfet.

    It's really good !!

Still have to plan how to install it inside the Kemper head but I'm confident it will fit in pretty good.

I guess it would be better to order a Y power supply cable in order to feed both at the same time but.. pretty easy.

It sceams Loud, and basically "EQ Flat"

I just hear a lil difference about bass range if A/B compared to the mosfet amp. And Maybe just a lil less headroom than the 100watt or even the 600watt of the KPA powerd version, but I don't think this will be a problem at rehersal (gonna test it next monday) we will see:)

  • Cool I really like my HB99 too ! I had no pb on my latest jam with a KONE & HB99 , others musicians even told me to tame my super loud amp as I was wearing some earplugs to filter the drum I was standing next to :D

Tell me how goes your rehearsal

  • Tell me how goes your rehearsal

It Was Great! Fn' Clean n LOUD

On the 1x12 with Kone, I had the Monitor Out Volume @ -3 and the HB99 Volume at 12.

No need to turn it up more than This (yes Main out in stereo to FOH as always)

    Really Good for 100 bucks, good feeling in front of the cab;

Great Real and Manageable screaming Feedbacks (that was the point)

    Thanks to all, cheers.

  • Pretty cool , I remember the Kone to have a large dispersion and no need to stand in front to ear yourself playing.

The feedback test is great , thx for letting us know. I remember the AC30 with blue celestion was fantastic, as well as fender amps with goodman imprints

  • I don't own one, but I wonder if my fairly long journey with power amps might shed some light.

Originally, I started with a 44 Caliber pedal, and immediately noticed that as I turned the pedal up, it introduced more gain to the signal. Definitely not a clean power amp. I went through several different ones, and all had the same issue. I must have gone through about 6 or 7 different ones back then. The game changer was when I got the Seymour Duncan PowerStage 170. I vividly remember testing it on my back deck with a friend, and it was clean all the way through ear splitting sounds. I then plugged in a Friedman BE overdrive pedal in front of the SD, and it was amazing. I cranked the 170 at 4ohms all the way up, and my friend walked down the block. When he got to the next corner, he called me, and said it sounded like he was standing next to the cabinet. He walked 2 blocks down, and called me saying that it sounded like a festival was playing on the block.

I guess the takeaway is that if it's clean power, grab it. If it adds gain to your signal, I would pass.

That's the case with most class D power amps like the HB or the powered kemper, they don't distort easily.
