I can verify the Player could be used for effects only as I ran a signal through yesterday and applied the effects after disabling amp and cabinet. It’s probably overkill for that use only but if you already have one it would work just fine. You could also try to run profiles through it and maybe EQ them to work through the amp and cab. Again not maybe ideal but could be close enough for bedroom rock and roll.

Not sure why the player wouldn’t be suitable as an effects unit. Loads of people use HX stomps and Fractal FM3’s as effects only in front of an amp and they’re intended to do the same as the KPP. I do it all the time. I actually think the player might be a bit more desirable as you can set up 5 slots (with amp and cab disabled) and have morphing on each. Gives you a lot of wiggle room for sounds. You could have 5 gain stages and then morph with an expression pedal to go full dry to wet and anywhere in between with whatever effects you wanted. I’m actually somewhat surprised Kemper doesn’t market that more. HX stomp is one of the most popular pedals in a long time because people stick it on their boards as an effects unit and then have a backup option to go direct if needed. Not really more expensive than a good delay and reverb pedal these days.

For me the drawbacks would be that you can't really adjust the effects without a computer or phone connected, and there's no effects loop. That's where I don't think it's optimal for that use, but it certainly could be done.

Yup. You have control over 4 non-selectable parameters and need a great memory for which rig is in each position.
Interestingly the Fractal VP4 lacks an fx loop as well.

Not true. You just lose stereo in you use it in 4CM

If you’re looking for a great multi effects unit, why not just get a used stage first generation?
then you get all the benefits of having a screen and plenty of foot switches to toggle things on and off, the stereo effects loop so that you can put your amp in the middle. The only thing you don’t get are the fixed effects. And you’ll still have quite an all in on unit if you do wanna or need to go direct from time to time. The problem with the fixed effects on the player is that it’s hard to have a use for more simulations effect blocks, the extra blocks become useful when you have enough foot switches to turn more things on and off without leaving the rig. Which the player has only three and seems more streamlined for switching between a few rigs than toggling effects within the same rig.
