Same Profile Different Input Different Tone

    Hey dudes!

Its been a while huh? Hope you all had a fantastic new year.

Dont really use my kemper as often as i used to (tried to) but i do come back to it now and again with fresh ears.

Just a quick post. Is it normal that i use the exact same profile through a different input on my apollo twin and get a completely different tone?

The chain in the first tone in the sound cloud clip is XLR - TRS into HiZ ( i know...its probably not very stable or a good idea to do that)

And the other tone chain is XLR - TRS to LINE in the back of my Apollo Twin.

See if you can guess which one is which lol.

To me the XLR - TRS to Line sounds like ear ripping arse like all high gain profiles do on my kemper. The XLR - TRS - HiZ sounds muddy but at least it aint ripping my ear drums apart haha.

...forgot what my question was...oh yeah...is it normal there is such a vast difference in tones when this is done.

    Rock on dudes!

  • You have completely different levels and impedances, so yes, they will sound different

Try dialing in the gain correctly on the line input, then dial in your rig to sound the way you want it to.

The gain stage on the apollo on both inputs are as low as they can go and the outputs on the kemper where roughly the same neither clipping i just thought it was interesting how one had a big buttery bass end and the other had none at all like they are two completely different profiles.

I was just enquiring if anyone knew the science behind why that is.

If ya don't ask you will never know right?

  • The HiZ input is to connect your guitar directly to the interface, without any amplification.

As you found out, the impedance of this input changes also changes the sound, have a listen:

You are probably distorting all the inputs, make sure the Apollo is set to Line level and try reducing the output level of the Kemper.

I understand how the HiZ and Line inputs differ i was just wondering where the bass bottom more smoother buttery tone the Xlr -Trs to Hiz chain came from and where it went when I swapped to xlr trs to line in chain where it went way brighter no bottom and scratchy. Maybe it's just my ears lol.

  • Connect through USB - that is what it is actually supposed to sound like.

If the Kemper sounds like arse to you then it's choice of profile, IR or settings. It sounds as good as you make it. There are enough ways to tweak amps and cabs and there are a gazillion profiles available. It's wrong to expect things to be right out of the box though. Also purchased profiles might not be to your liking, depending on the style of the creator. I have no experience who makes the best profiles for your kind of tones, but if I had to play in that style I would probably use the Mattfig Badlander for it.

Im not saying the profile or kemper sound like arse maybe arse was the wrong word lol im saying the tone sounds completely different from a simple input change making it soud weird. The first recording sounds like a ribbon mic and the second sounds like an sm57 mic if that makes sense but they are both the exact same profile using the exacts same cable just plugged into a different input on my apollo and this happens on all of my profiles i was just asking if there was a reason for this and if its normal.

    :)
