Godin HG Steel (Semi hollowbody guitar) sound

    Hi,

I have a Godin multic HG steel guitar. It's a kind of semihollow guitar. It has both piezo and magnetic pickups that can be send to separate outputs. The acoustic sound is wonderful.

However, I'm not satisfied of the sound of the magnetic pickup (a lipstick). I use only it through his dedicated output and no matter amps and cabinets I can't find any sound. I thing is because of the amount of body sound?

Any advice of amps to use? Or eq settings to reduice the body sound and get closer of a solidbody sound?

    Thanks

  • Keep in mind it is a neck position single coil pickup, too. Rock-style humbucker sounds will likely prove to be elusive.

The acoustic-style bridge (and strings?) will give you different attack/sustain characteristics than an all metal electric bridge. It may be worth exploring the use of overdrive/fuzz, with their inherent compression, to give you sounds similar to Nirvana Unplugged "Man who sold the world", if that appeals to you.

Good points. I hadn’t realised it had an acoustic bridge. I assumed it was like other semi hollow electric instruments with a piezo.

Also the strings is a good spot. If using Phosphor Bronze Acoustic strings rather than electric”steel” strings the magnetic pickup will struggle. S0me top end makers like Ken Parker have dedicated electric pickups designed tomwork with phosphor bronze strings. I think the only retail makers who do a compatible pickup are Bartollini and Benadetto (I think Seymour Duncan now owns them). There may be others that i’m not aware of but the point is make sure to try a set of electrguitar strings.
