External Sync or trigger for new tremolo slicing effects

This concerns the new pulse slicer tremolo effects in the 12.0 BETA release. Awesome effect, BUT effectively un-useable without some way to sync it to some external source in order to tie it to a song (click track / backing track etc).

Typically most pedals that try to do this (like the Boss Beat Slicer pedal) use some midi clock feed but I've found this to be extremely unreliable and equally un-useable to really do the whole "How Soon is Now" by The Smiths or "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day type beat slicing. The most reliable way to do this is to use a triggered gate with an external audio signal. I currently achieve this with a Drawmer DS-201 in the effects loop of the Kemper with an audio trigger coming from the backing track etc - rock solid. However, it would be awesome to do all this internally in the Kemper - a) that's one less box to gig with - and one less thing to go wrong!! and b) One less D - A : A - D conversion to do, and Kemper's internal controls for the tremolo are really good.

Suggestion, what if we could send an audio trigger in via one of the effects loop returns, and this could trigger the pulse - it would also mean you could have the trigger be any rhythm you want rather than being stuck to 1/16ths or 1/8ths etc etc

  • I guess I could experiment with that even now and switch the input signal to the Kemper to be a click track. Use the beat scanner to sync up to it and then switch the input back to the guitar signal and in theory the internal Tremolo should now be locked to the backing track. not quite as flexible as a genuine external trigger for a gate and a little clunky having to switch the input from a click track and then back to the guitar, but if it works, I guess it’s a manageable workaround other than continuing to use my drawmer DS 201 obviously

  • OS 12 introduces these new Tremolo, Slicer, and Autopanner effects but also a new Tempo chapter in the manual. Here a paragraph related to your subject:

A single tap of the TAP button on the first beat of the measure will bring your rhythmic modulation effects, such as Tremolo or Slicer, back into sync with your drummer, without affecting the tempo. The sync will happen smoothly and will be almost unnoticeable, which is a unique feature. Do not resync more often than a bar apart, otherwise your tapping will be identified as a new tempo.

The TAP button can be simulated via MIDI control change #30.

The manual set related to OS 12 is available at the KEMPER download page.

  • Thank you :)) I was directed here (to this tap suggestion) on a FB Kemper group and it works brilliantly.

using the tap tempo button manually was nowhere near accurate enough but triggering it via midi (channel #30 with any value other than 0) was great. Although I ended up actually sending a midi trigger on every beat so effectively doing a constant tap tempo via midi and that was nailed in. Sending the occasional tap was not tight enough. I do like the way the Kemper smoothly changes its tempo based upon these taps but it wasn’t the locked in vibe I needed.

But thank you, I can confirm this method absolutely works.

Now this still doesn’t enable me to do the kinds of complex rhythms I do with a triggered gate like my drawmer DS-201 with a side-chain audio trigger, so the suggestion of a future enhancement where you can send a side-chain audio trigger into an effects return would still be awesome but for now, the pulse tremolo is totally locked :)))

  • OK got that sorted. Turning an effects loop on off via midi with nothing on it and the mix on 100% and suddenly I have perfect gating and can program any rhythm. Awesome.

So you are getting a ‘slice’ effect via an external midi signal opening and closing the Kemper effects loop volume setting at a programmed tempo and rythm? Not manipulating the slicer effect tempo?

If so what device are you using?
