mission pedal problem with remote and powerhead

I plug my pedal into the remote, input 4, loaded a wah into the effect block, set it up and when I use the pedal it makes a weird type of pitch effect and then goes into mute with the tuner showing ?

any help would really help, it's driving me insane.

BTW the mission pedal is the one without a switch
