Thanks waraba & BayouTexan . The reverse reverb there is just a preset in the single tap delay section I think.

See above waraba tried to get in the ballpark feel of Quicksilver Messenger, didn't quite get it right, a little too much gain on the individual tracks. Not the right arrangement.

Very good effort Per, I think you're really close on voice treatment, bass & guitars tone, even the drums and the mix feel 60's , very well done !

John's gear is especially strange & vintage , it's hard to get close, but you are , the guitar style is also very peculiar and so psychedelic.

Thanks waraba the profile is a Showman, not the Dual model that Cipollina used as the Dual options in the exchange were too muddy as starting points. I used a phaser rather than the rotary because I only wanted a subtle shimmer, a combination of reverbs to get the natural sound and of course my Epiphone SG.

The big problems are that John liked a very fast vibrato and dual stosps and I was just too tired to really pull it off in an improv against the chords last night. I don't have the tone or range of their singer, at least not with power in the upper registers and the orange and mix was just too dense and amateur sounding.

But it was fun to mess about with trying to get in the ballpark.

You could have had 12 gold records in the late 60's Per! But I have heard your hard rock /heavy metal sound and like that a lot. Tell the truth if you were the guitarist for the Who, Rolling Stones, CCR, Moody Blues, or CSN?

Just catching up with the Per quadruple album- all good stuff mate.
As to John Cipollina, you probably knew this but I didn't.

"To create his distinctive guitar sound, Cipollina developed a one-of-a-kind amplifier stack. His Gibson SG guitars had two pickups, one for bass and one for treble. The bass pickup fed into two Standel bass amps on the bottom of the stack, each equipped with two 15-inch speakers. The treble pickups fed two Fender amps: a Fender Twin Reverb and a Fender Dual Showman that drove six Wurlitzer horns.^[3]"

Thanks BayouTexan I don’t tend to go for heavier sounds that often as I can’t really provide an in the ballpark vocal. Pretty sure I’m not a more prolific than normal since passing David Crosby.

Thanks spottydog10 I actually didn’t know anything about him or Quicksliver Messenger before waraba brought him up so I had to do my own research. I only found he used a dual showman, but it sounds like he was indeed very dedicated to finding his sound.

Thank-you Monkey_Man ! Though to get a more modern sound I did have to apply more compression than I’d have liked, especially to the vocals.

Yes indeed, that's mainly the bigsby on the SG from what I saw on vids

Very cool tune with lots of great guitar sounds.

I was surprised as I was (due to the title) expecting a slow and smooth tune.

Tonights is an attempt to get towards a more soft 70's sound with a little legato work. More focus on the sound from each individual track and trying to balance between space and glue/cohesion. I'm using tape emulation on each track and a little bit of the capitol limiter set to only soften the loudest of peaks. It sounds good on the studio monitors, but listening to it on the crapmac(tm) speaker the individual parts sound over compressed.

Don't dis your song. Sounds really good and crisp on my desktop reference speakers. I would maybe only loosen up the kick some.
