I left Reaper in 2014 because it wasn't compatible with all my Waves plugins. Now it is (mac, pc, since April)
I toyed with 2 other DAWs, took time off, then came back (remembering nothing!) and found Reaper intuitive for my, lets say, unorthodox mind.
Kenny Gioia has a complete set of free "Reaper Explained" tutorials which are not only explanative in the best teaching voice ever, but more so: He shows you how to setup features that make production easier (i.e. creating a Toolbar for quick slicing and take choosing to speed up your Vocal Comp work)
The MIDI editing features are now up to par with other DAWS, finally.
And the theme (skin) called Imperial by White Tie is, if your screen is large enough, a most inspiring skin (also free):
