Keep in mind that Tom Scholz didn’t use a Rockman for more Than A Feeling. It was a Marshall.
So, if you want that sound, you are better off profiling a good Marshall with something like an MXR 6 band graphic EQ in front of it and baked into the profile. There are lots of posts about Tom’s live MXR 6 band settings he used to emulate his studio sound on that first album before he developed the Rockman.

The MXR X100 Rockman pedal profiles quite well. I kept the Input Gain slider fairly low so as not to trigger the compression, especially on the clean sounds. Then, just added the comp afterwards in the profile.

I also have an original Scholz Rockman X100 that I had professionally rebuilt and rehoused in a 19” rack mount a long time ago by Paul Lenders in the Netherlands. Military spec rotary switches, Powercon 240v mains etc.
I have used the Clean2 setting tracked up with a real amp for certain clean sounds for years.

Was really happy when the MXR Pedal came out and bought one straight away. I think it does the Rockman sound perfectly.

  • From what I understand, Tom used an attenuated Plexi, creamback speakers, and a chorus pedal and then put that sound into his signature preamps. He may have used his Rockman preamps on the Don't Look Back album (plus not using his home studio) which maybe why some people say his tone is not as good as the first album. That's about as much as I've read about.

Either way, no mistaking his tone! Which I love on both those albums! I was able to tweak the profiles against the mix so any cover band can pass with good grades.

No doubt those preamps want you to play More Than a Feeling for your first song with it. :)
